War and Modernity: Through the Texts of Sofroniy of Vratsa.

Summary

The current study tries to make a parallel between the triggered wartime events from the end of the 18th and in the beginning of the 19th century, mainly the Russian-Turkish wars, and the reaching early Bulgarian modernity. The text-related layers of the term of “war” are traced in different works of bishop Sophronius of Vratsa. The parameters of few literature-ideological expressions of war are outlined – a subject-fiction, epistemological, historical, modern-instrumental one. The author’s “ego” inscription in the battle theme, the semantics, the functionalization and the political instrumentalization of war are analyzed. The thesis about the intensive relation between war and (Renaissance) culture is introduced.
